APC step vs. conical end faces
You may not be aware, but there are two types of end faces possible for Angled Physical Connectors (APC).
- Step ferrules are much more common that conical ferrules (nearly 5:1 ratio in the field)
- Step ferrules are considered an improvement over conical ferrules in both cost and ease of manufacture.
- They are easier to polish than conical – they can hold tighter geometry specs and take less time to process.
- There is no performance advantage – if built to spec.
Fluke Networks APC test reference cords and launch fibers use a step end face.
