| To test just a spool of cable, the following is by far the quickest method. Dont forget to test from both ends; the lengths should be the same. If not, then there is a break in the cable reel. This test should be done on all spools of cable prior to installation. In the absence of an OTDR, use an optical loss tester. Do not use a visual Fault Locator. Even if the cable has a break in it, you may see light at the end of the cable.
